Museo Reina Sofía and Documenta Madrid International Festival have organized a retrospective of films made by Gonzalo García-Pelayo (Madrid, 1947) between 1976 and 1986. The retro named Dejen de prohibir que no alcanzo a desobedecer todo / Stop banning things, because I can't manage to disobey it all. The cinema of Gonzalo García-Pelayo took place at the Documenta Madrid in June 2022 and contained 13 films by the filmmaker who is a cult film author in his native Spain but less known abroad.
A filmmaker, nightclub owner, music producer, professional gambler, publisher and speculator in the contemporary immaterial economy, García-Pelayo concentrates multiple lives into one. All these facets are summarised in a personal interpretation of cinema, understood as a form of existence based on vitality, limitless desire, happenings as a narrative strategy and on insubordination to all that is predictable, whether on a formal or political level.
García-Pelayo's films set in the changing and tumultuous society of the Spain of the “Transition”, specifically in the years from 1975 to 1986, between the death of Francisco Franco and the country's entry into the European Economic Community, are of special interest for the researchers and today’s audience.
An extensive retrospective of Jonas Mekas, an artist and a filmmaker straddled between Europe and the US, documentary and the avant-garde, including his 13 films is reachable online on DAfilms.com, a platform for doculovers and professionals.
The Lithuanian-American director, poet and visual artist, is often called the godfather of American avant-garde cinema, but we have to remember that he is also a founder of the diary genre in documentary film, now called I-film.
